CULTURE BUILDING ACTIVITIES

Hawaii Rise kupuna and instructors educate and guide participants in engaging in Hawaiian cultural activities – both traditional practices, as well modern adaptions – through free workshops. Cultural activities will include, but are not limited to: instrument crafting, instrument instruction, music, hula, art, storytelling, lauhala weaving, lei making, and food preparation. We also offer the opportunity for hands-on learning and experience utilizing native plants and learn about conservation, as well as Native Hawaiian Access Rights and how to best exercise those rights to connect with the aina and explore and practice such cultural activities.

While some community members are blessed to have family members or others to share these skills and knowledge, others do not have such resources, and the opportunities for affordable activities beyond school “Hawaiian Studies” classes are limited.

This allows our program and participants to “pay it forward” and exponentially increase awareness and skills in across an even larger population beyond the first-hand Hawaii Rise program participants; and allows educators and community members to connect and collaborate in the continued interest of improving education and opportunities available for and in the community.
